Why is travel insurance important?

Travel insurance has got your back if something on your trip doesn’t go to plan. Whether it’s flight delays before you go or lost luggage at the airport, a tailored policy can cover you.

Things beyond your control can leave you seriously out of pocket, with costs that can run into thousands of pounds. But with a good holiday insurance policy, you’ve got a helping hand in an emergency whilst abroad. From finding you the best medical facilities if you’re feeling under the weather, to getting you home safely if you need to cut your holiday short.

Take out a policy as soon as you book your trip and you’ll be covered for:

What does travel insurance cover?

We offer three levels of travel insurance – Basic, Comprehensive, and Signature – to match different travel needs.

This list gives an idea of what’s included in our Basic package, but it’s important to read through your policy before you set off on your trip. It’ll help you to understand what you’re covered for, and what you’re not.

You can discover more in our guide to what travel insurance covers too.

Staysure policies usually include cover for:

Pre-existing medical conditions – most declared conditions are covered, meaning we could help with medical costs like doctor visits or hospital stays related to your condition while you’re away.

Baggage – protects your belongings against loss, theft, or damage.

Cancellation and curtailment – financial protection for unexpected events like illness or injury.

Repatriation – we could cover the cost of bringing you back home if medically necessary.

Travel delay – if you’re delayed for more than 12 hours, we could compensate you.

Money and passport – cover for lost or stolen cash or travel documents while you’re away.

What’s not covered?

Holiday insurance is here to help if something unexpected goes wrong. But that doesn’t always mean everything is covered.

If you’re unsure about your policy, take a moment to review the details or reach out to our friendly team. Whether you want to check what’s included or have questions about your cover, we’re here to help.

Your Staysure policy won’t cover these types of claims:

✘ Incidents involving alcohol or drugs – if an incident happens while you’re under the influence of alcohol or drugs, we won’t be able to pay out on your claim.

Choosing not to travel – we don’t cover trip cancellations if you simply change your mind or decide not to go.

✘ Undeclared pre-existing conditions – any medical conditions you don’t tell us about when setting up your policy won’t be covered.

✘ Strike action – if a strike is already announced when you book your trip or when you purchase your travel insurance (whichever is later),we can’t cover any disruption caused by it.

Travel for medical procedures – if you receive any voluntary treatment (like surgery or specialist care) whilst you’re away, you won’t be covered.

Travelling with a pre-existing medical condition?

Finding travel insurance that covers pre-existing medical conditions can be tricky. Not every insurer will cover you. That’s why it’s so important to choose a provider that understands your needs.

We’re proud to say that 97% of our customers are able to cover their pre-existing medical conditions with us. Whether it’s asthma, diabetes, heart conditions, or joint problems, we’ll make sure your medical needs are taken into account when putting together your quote.

How much is travel insurance?

How much your travel insurance policy will cost depends on your personal situation. While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, knowing what factors are used to calculate your premium can make it easier to choose the right cover for your trip. So, what can affect the cost?

  • Where you’re going – travelling to places like the USA often means higher premiums because medical care there can be expensive.

  • How long your trip is – the longer your trip, the more likely you are to need to claim. Your premium might increase to reflect this.

  • Your age – older travellers, for example, might pay more because they’re at a higher risk of needing medical assistance.

  • Your medical history – if you have pre-existing conditions, declaring them when taking out a policy is essential. It might affect the cost, but it guarantees you’re properly covered.

  • Optional add-ons – choosing a policy with lower excess, higher limits, or additional cover like gadget protection or sports activities may cost more.

What our expert says…

“While it’s tempting to pick the cheapest travel insurance available, it’s important to remember that a bare-bones policy might not give you the protection you truly need. Good travel insurance isn’t just about ticking a box—it’s about peace of mind. Whether it’s a medical emergency, a cancelled flight, or lost baggage, knowing you’re covered means you can travel stress-free."

When should I buy travel insurance?

Most people find that the best time to buy travel insurance is as soon as you book your trip. With a single trip policy, your cover begins straight away, protecting you against cancellation if unexpected events mean you have to cancel before you even set off. If you choose an annual multi-trip policy, you can delay your cover start date for up to 90 days from purchase.

Remember, we don’t offer travel insurance after departure, so it’s important to arrange cover before you travel.

Find out more in our guide to buying travel insurance.

How long can I get travel insurance for?

Whether you’re planning a quick getaway or a longer holiday, your travel insurance can be tailored to fit your plans. The length of your cover depends on the type of policy you choose:

  • Single Trip Insurancecovers you for one trip, starting from the day you buy your policy, and ending when you return home. You can enjoy up to 104 days of travel on a single trip.

  • Annual Multi-Trip Insurance – protects you for multiple trips within a 12-month period, with up to 50 days of cover per trip. Cancellation cover begins on your policy’s start date, which can be delayed up to 90 days from purchase.

Don't just take our word for it

"Last year my husband was taken into hospital on the morning we should have come home from Germany. This resulted in a 12 day stay in Cologne. Everything was arranged for us [by Staysure], an ambulance picked us up from the hotel and an ambulance was waiting for us at the airport when we reached England and brought us home. Submitting paperwork to claim back our medical expenses and hotel costs was very easy and Staysure paid everything without question.”

Add optional policy extras to your travel insurance quote

Tailor your policy to meet your needs. If you’re sailing the seven seas on an ocean cruise, or you’d rather not pay any excess, we have an add-on for just that!

Off on a cruise holiday? Cruise Plus Cover protects you against things like not being able to dock at a scheduled port due to bad weather or cabin confinement. It’s available on Comprehensive and Signature policies. Find out more about our Cruise cover.

The ‘Personal Baggage’ section of our travel insurance policy can cover your tech up to £250 on a Basic policy and £500 on a comprehensive policy. However, if you’re going to be taking expensive tech away with you, like a laptop, smartphone, or smartwatch, Gadget Cover can protect an unlimited number of your devices for up to £2,000.

This cover includes protection against accidental loss or theft, damage from accidents or malicious intent, liquid damage, and unauthorised call, text or data usage. It’s available on Comprehensive policies as an add-on, but included on Signature policies as standard. Learn more about Gadget Cover.

This add-on can help if you have a medical emergency while taking part in winter sports activities. Available on Comprehensive and Signature policies, it can also help cover the costs should you lose or damage your own winter sports equipment as well as cover the costs of unused ski passes, piste closures and avalanches.

Winter sports cover is already included as standard when you choose a Comprehensive or Signature Annual policy and covers you for two trips, up to a total of 28 days. Find out more about Winter Sports cover.

If you need to make a claim, having an excess waiver means you won’t have to pay out from your own pocket.

This can’t be added retrospectively and doesn’t apply to Car Hire Excess Waiver or Gadget cover. It’s available on Comprehensive policies as an add-on, but included on Signature policies as standard.

Golf insurance protects your personal golf equipment if it’s lost, stolen, or damaged during your trip. You’ll also have hole-in-one cover – meaning we’ll pay you £300 if you score a hole-in-one during your trip, as long as you’re a member of a recognised golf club affiliated with a national golfing union, have your scorecard signed by your playing partner, and are playing at an affiliated golf course. It’s available on Comprehensive and Signature policies when playing non-professionally only.

Frequently asked questions

Travel insurance isn’t something you legally need for most trips, but it’s a smart way to stay protected from the unexpected. From missed flights and lost luggage to medical emergencies abroad, it can provide the support you need when things don’t go as planned.

In some cases, however, travel insurance is mandatory:

  • Tour and cruise operators – many tour companies and cruise lines will ask you to provide proof of travel insurance before allowing you to travel.

  • High-risk activities – some adventure activities, such as skiing or scuba diving, might require specific insurance to make sure you’ve got the right level of cover for injuries or emergencies. To make sure you’re covered, read through your policy documents before setting off.

How much travel insurance you need depends on what you want to be covered for and the type of trip you’re taking.

According to Which?, a travel insurance policy should include:

  • £5 million for medical cover – this can help with emergency treatment, hospital bills, and repatriation costs.

  • £2,000 for cancellation cover – or the full cost of your holiday. This makes sure you’re covered if certain illnesses or bereavement force you to cancel.

  • £1,500 for personal belongings – or the value of your possessions, giving you protection against loss, theft, or damage.

When choosing your policy, consider the specifics of your trip. Declaring any pre-existing medical conditions is essential to avoid issues with claims if you need treatment abroad. If you’re planning activities like skiing or scuba diving, check that your policy includes these or consider adding extra cover. For longer trips or multiple destinations, options like Long Stay or Annual Multi-Trip Insurance might provide the flexibility you need.

If you’re after a high level of cover, you might like our Signature Travel Insurance policy, for extra peace of mind. But if you’re only after standard cover, our Basic Travel Insurance may be the perfect fit for you.

Something you live with daily shouldn’t stop you from exploring the world—but medical emergencies abroad can be incredibly costly. That’s why having the right cover is so important.

We can cover most pre-existing medical conditions. In fact, 97% of our customers have got cover for their medical condition(s) with us.

To make sure you’re protected, it’s important to declare any pre-existing medical conditions when you take out your policy. This includes common conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, or cancer. If anything changes, such as a change to any medication after buying your policy but before your trip, you’ll need to update your details. You can do this online by logging into your My Staysure account, or over the phone with the help of our friendly team.

Pregnancy isn’t considered a medical condition, so you don’t need to declare it when taking out holiday insurance. However, if you have any pre-existing medical conditions or complications related to your pregnancy, such as high blood pressure, these will need to be disclosed during the quote process.

To get cover you’ll need to confirm the following:

  • Your due date is more than 8 weeks after your trip ends, or 16 weeks if you’re expecting multiple births.
  • You’re not planning to give birth while on your trip.
  • Your doctor or midwife has confirmed you’re fit to travel.
  • Your travel provider has approved your travel to and from your destination.
  • You understand that medical costs related to giving birth abroad won’t be covered unless it’s an emergency.

Excess is the amount you agree to pay towards a claim before your insurer covers the rest. For instance, if you claim £500 for medical expenses and your excess is £99, your payout will be £401 after the excess is deducted.

Your excess is per person, per claim. For example, you might need to make a claim for lost luggage, as well as unexpected medical expenses. In this situation, you would need to pay an excess per person for each claim.

To remove this cost completely, you can choose an excess waiver. With this add-on, you won’t need to pay any excess if you make a claim. Our Signature policy already includes the waiver as standard, and it’s an option you can add when purchasing a Comprehensive policy.

Discover more in our guide to travel insurance excess and waivers.

If your flight has been cancelled, don’t worry!

First thing’s first, contact your airline or travel company and ask them to rearrange your flight or give you a refund. If they can’t, you could try doing a chargeback with your credit card company if you used one to book the flight. And if that doesn’t work out, that’s when your travel insurance can help.

Just remember – once you’ve rearranged your flights, you might need need to update your insurance policy with your new travel dates. If you’re a Staysure customer, you can do this by logging into My Staysure, or over the phone with the help of our customer support team.

Your travel insurance should cover you for strikes—as long as the strike action wasn’t common knowledge when you booked your trip or took out your policy (whichever came later).

If you have a Staysure policy, you can make a claim for emergency travel or accommodation costs if the strike causes disruption to your plans. If your trip is delayed by more than 12 hours due to the strike, you’re also covered to abandon your trip and submit a cancellation claim.

Need to arrive late to start your trip because of industrial action? Our policies can help with arranging overnight accommodation and alternative travel, so you can still make the most of your holiday.

Read more in our guide to Strikes: am I covered by my travel insurance?

Whenever you travel abroad, it’s a good idea to take out travel insurance. EHIC and GHIC cards provide access to emergency healthcare at state-run facilities in the EU, often at a reduced cost or for free. However, they don’t cover everything, like rescue, repatriation, or medical care on a cruise.

Travel insurance steps in to protect you from these additional costs, giving you peace of mind. For example, if you need to be brought back to the UK for medical reasons, a GHIC or EHIC won’t cover the expense—but your travel insurance can.

Read more in GHIC is the new EHIC: what you need to know.

You should be covered in most destinations if the country you’re going to is safe to visit. To check if your destination is safe to visit, take a look at the FCDO’s travel advice. The FCDO’s (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) advice can change at any time, so make sure you check it’s safe to travel before you set off.

If the FCDO, World Health Organisation or local authorities have advised against ‘all’ or ‘all but essential’ travel to your destination, then it won’t be safe for you to travel there.

If you travel against FCDO advice, your policy will become invalid and won’t cover you if you need to claim. Even if advice changes while you’re on holiday, you won’t be covered if your destination was listed as unsafe when you travelled.

A good travel insurance policy acts as a safety net, offering peace of mind and financial protection when the unexpected happens. Whether it’s a delayed flight, lost luggage, or a sudden need to cut your trip short, our policies will make sure you’re not left to handle costs and challenges on your own.

When considering travel insurance, the first step is understanding your own needs.

Medical cover is a priority for many travellers, especially when visiting places where healthcare costs are high. A good policy should cover emergency medical expenses, hospital treatments, and even repatriation if necessary. That said, if medical cover isn’t a concern—for example, you’re staying somewhere where you’re already insured—you might focus on other areas, such as protecting against trip cancellations or delays.

The insurance provider you choose matters. Look for those accredited by trusted regulatory bodies. Checking customer reviews can provide insight into how a provider treats its policyholders—are they easy to work with, and do they support customers promptly when needed? Transparency is also important; clear terms and conditions should leave no room for surprises when making a claim.
