What is a travel insurance excess?
If you need to make a claim on your travel insurance policy, you will usually need to pay an ‘excess’.
A travel insurance excess is a sum of money that you pay before your claim is paid. The amount is outlined when you take out your policy. In a usual scenario, a higher excess means paying a lower insurance premium and a lower excess would mean your premium might be a little higher.
Why get travel insurance excess waiver?
Travel insurance excess waiver is a bit like a safety net. It covers you for the cost of an excess should you need to make a claim. So you won’t need to pay anything up front.
In short, an excess waiver means you can travel with confidence that you won’t be hit with unexpected costs if you make a claim. If you’re planning a longer trip, where you may face several unexpected situations, then excess waiver can provide reassurance that you won’t be out of pocket.
What is my policy excess?
Your excess is per person, per claim, and depends on which Staysure travel insurance policy you have picked.
Excess per claim | Excess with excess waiver add-on |
Basic policy £129 | Add-on not available |
Comprehensive policy £99 | £0 |
Signature policy £0 | £0 (Add-on included as standard) |
Can a travel insurance policy have more than one excess?
Yes. You could come up against unexpected events on holiday that cause you to make more than one claim on your trip. For example, you might need to make a claim for lost luggage, as well as unexpected medical expenses. In this situation, without travel insurance excess waiver, you would need to pay an excess per person for each claim.
Can I get travel insurance with no excess?
Our Signature travel insurance policy does not have an excess.
Staysure offers three travel insurance tiers. Each tier has its own excess policy that varies depending on whether you’ve added excess waiver.
-
Signature policy: You don’t need to pay an excess on any claim as it comes with an excess waiver as standard.
-
Comprehensive policy: You can include excess waiver as an optional add-on. This will mean that you won’t have to pay an excess on a claim. You can only buy excess waiver when you first buy your insurance and it can’t be added at a later date. Without excess waiver, the excess fee is £99 per claim with our Comprehensive policy.
-
Basic policy: Our basic policy will always have an excess of £129 per claim. You cannot buy excess waiver if you have a Basic policy.
