Pre-travel checklist for travelling with cardiomyopathy
Before booking your trip, talk to your GP to make sure you’re fit to fly, or fit to cruise or travel.
Check any restrictions on travelling with medication or medical equipment in the country you’re visiting, including whether you need a signed doctor’s letter, which you can check with the country’s embassy.
It may be helpful to request your most recent ECG to take with you.
If you’re travelling in Europe, get a GHIC – remember, this doesn’t replace travel insurance.
If you have an implanted device, find out if there are pacing clinics where you’re visiting.

Tips for travelling with cardiomyopathy
If you need to bring medication, keep them in their original packaging with your prescription in case you need medical help. You might want to pack them in your hand luggage and suitcase in case any baggage is lost or delayed.
You may be taking medication on a fixed schedule. If you’re travelling to a different time zone, speak to your nurse or pharmacist for advice on a new schedule to fit with the local time.
If your heart medication causes sun sensitivity, it may be worth keeping an eye on the weather forecast and taking care outdoors between 11am – 3pm. Remember to always use sun protection.
If you take diuretics, your GP or pharmacist can help you plan staying hydrated on your trip, especially if you’re going somewhere hot.
Going on a trip is a great way to get your steps in without even realising it. But some people with cardiomyopathy might need to take extra care when being active. Here are some things to consider as you go:
Stay in accommodation that’s easy to get to and close to facilities like restaurants, or shops
If there’s an activity you want to do that might be challenging, speak to your GP in advance to make sure you’re fit enough
Carry phone numbers for your local emergency services and your travel insurer in your wallet or purse
If you find yourself feeling stressed, stop what you’re doing and try to relax with some deep breathing exercises
If you have an implanted device, carry your device identification card at all times and show it to tour guides or activity staff beforehand
Getting plenty of rest between activities is a must when you travel. Make sure your room is comfortable and quiet. You might want to ask for one that’s close to a lift, reception, or an emergency exit for peace of mind.
Some people with cardiomyopathy are fitted with an implanted device such as a pacemaker or an ICD. This shouldn’t stop you from flying.
If you’re worried about flying with a device, it might help to call your airline and let them know in advance. The airline and crew members will be able to look after you and help you fly more confidently.
During security checks, you can walk through the airport scanners like normal. This should not interfere with your device or damage it.
You might be scanned with a handheld scanner. Let security know you have a device and show them your device identification card. You can ask them to avoid passing it over your heart.
If you have any concerns, you can ask to be searched by hand instead.

If you’ve recently had surgery or have had deep vein thrombosis (DVT) before, ask your GP if compression socks would be necessary.
Book an aisle seat on your flight so you can get up and walk around the plane. When you’re sitting, it might help to stretch your arms and legs in front of you to help with blood flow.
If you’re on a long road trip, consider planning plenty of rest stops along the way so you can get out of the car and move around. Simple exercises like circling your ankles when you’re in the car can help soothe discomfort.
If you or someone on your policy is admitted to hospital or your outpatient treatment is likely to cost more than £350, contact us as soon as possible. Where you have a valid claim, and your medical expenses exceed £350 we will look to settle the bill directly with the medical provider where possible.
