Pre-travel checklist for travelling with osteoporosis
Talk to your GP to make sure you’re fit to travel and guidance on activities and trips suitable for you and your needs.
If you take hormone therapies to treat osteoporosis and you plan to fly or travel long-haul ask your GP about compression garments and whether you have an increased risk of blood clots.
Prepare enough medication and medical supplies for your entire trip with extras in case of losses or delays.
Make copies of your prescriptions to carry with you during security.
If you need it, arrange special travel assistance with your travel provider such as a wheelchair or support with luggage.
If you’re travelling with a mobility aid, inform your travel provider in advance so they can make the necessary arrangements.
Locate the local healthcare and emergency services in the area you’re going to and how to use them, including contact numbers.
If you’re planning to travel in Europe, get a GHIC – remember, this doesn’t replace travel insurance.
You might be taking medicines for osteoporosis that require a needle. You may need a signed doctor’s letter for this, which you can check with the embassy of the country you're going to.
Some doctors may charge for this service. This isn't covered by travel insurance.
We know how common bone conditions are, and we’re here to support you in continuing to see the world. What our expert says…
“Travel insurance can help safeguard against the cost of emergency care abroad, should you need it. It’s also an invaluable source of support in navigating foreign healthcare systems. By declaring your condition, you’ll help make sure your policy provides protection, allowing you to travel with greater peace of mind.

Tips for travelling with osteoporosis
It’s best to keep all your medication in its original packaging, along with copies of the prescription. You may also want to pack it in both your hand luggage and suitcase in case any baggage is lost or delayed.
If you’re taking monoclonal antibodies to treat your bone disease, it’s worth getting a refrigeration cool bag to keep it cool as you travel. Speak to your pharmacist about this before you go.
It’s important to make sure the tap water is safe to drink in your destination country. If it is not, you should use bottled water with the lowest calcium level to take your medication.
Make sure to speak to your GP or pharmacist before you go about treatment schedules, proper storage, and any side effects to look out for on your trip.
When you’re on your trip, you may be worried about the risk of fractures when out and about. But there are ways for you to stay active and reduce the chances of that happening.
Having the right clothes is a great place to start. Consider lightweight breathable clothes that you can easily remove and layer. This will help you avoid getting flustered from overheating.
You might also want to get a great pair of walking shoes. Comfortable shoes with a well-cushioned insole and a patterned sole will provide extra joint support and more grip to prevent slips.
You’ll likely be walking much more than usual, so use a walking aid. Things like walking frames can help with balance, and a perching stool (a walking stick with a seat) can give you breaks whenever you need it.
Starting your day with stretches can get your circulation going and warm up your muscles. And ending the day with stretches will help work out any aches and stiffness, resulting in a better night’s sleep.
It may be tempting to try out new activities when you’re away. But always talk to your doctor in advance to minimise your risk of an accident.
A trip can be a great time to unwind and relax. Here are some things you can do as you go to keep the stress to a minimum and reduce the chances of an accident.
Travel in off-peak times – avoiding the crowds can reduce the risk of being bumped into or having a fall.
Keep luggage light and on wheels – consider a suitcase you can push instead of pull to reduce strain and help with balance.
Allow yourself extra time when travelling between places so you don’t feel rushed or overwhelmed.
Book in advance – don’t leave things last minute or rely on walk-ins.
Factor in plenty of breaks to rest in between activities.
Heated pads and ice packs to help manage pain.
If you find yourself getting stressed, stop what you’re doing and try some deep breathing techniques.
Rest is an essential part of any trip so it’s important you find accommodation that is suitable for your needs.
Some people with a bone condition may find rooms with the following features helpful in having a comfortable stay:
A low bed and minimal furnishings – this will reduce the chances of you bumping into things or having a fall.
A bathroom fitted with hand rails and non-slip mats.
A room on the ground floor or by the lift, and is close to reception.
Step-free access to public areas like the restaurant or lobby.
A fridge in the room for ice packs and medication.
Common questions for travelling with osteoporosis
If you’ve had symptoms, tests, treatments, medication, or appointments for osteoporosis or osteopenia in the last two years, you need to declare it for travel insurance.
If you have osteoporosis, osteopenia or any other pre-existing medical conditions, including those like arthritis or back and neck problems, you need to let us know.
If we don’t know about it, we won’t be able to cover you if you need to make a claim regarding your medical condition.
You may be concerned about flying when you have osteoporosis. But there are steps you can take to help.
Consider mobility assistance such as help with your luggage, a wheelchair, or support boarding and deboarding the plane.
Bring a lumbar pillow with you for lower back support.
Use a hot pack during the journey to ease any pain.
Stay hydrated – air cabins tend to be quite dry and dehydration can make pain worse.
If you’re flying with mobility aids, tell the airline well in advance and make sure to label them with your contact details and care instructions.
It’s worth thinking about the local climate when you’re arranging a trip. Some people with osteoporosis may feel more joint pain than usual when it’s cold, especially if they have another condition like arthritis.
If you find your osteoporosis is worse in cold weather, do talk to your GP for ways to manage your pain and symptoms.
Unless your doctor has advised you against certain foods, there shouldn’t be any reason why you can’t enjoy a wide range of food.
Getting enough vitamin D and calcium on a trip may be a cause of worry for people with osteoporosis. But as long as you’re eating a healthy, balanced diet, you shouldn’t be concerned.
It may give you peace of mind to carry snacks with you that are calcium-rich like hard cheese and almonds. These can also offer you an energy boost when you’re out and about.
If you’re worried, it’s best to speak to your doctor. They’ll be able to advise you on any changes you might need to make in your diet or if you need something like supplements.
In an emergency, contact the local emergency services first, and then call our 24-hour emergency helpline. Our team will help arrange your care, and find the most appropriate place for treatment and follow-up care.
If you or someone on your policy is admitted to hospital or your outpatient treatment is likely to cost more than £350, contact us as soon as possible. Where you have a valid claim, and your medical expenses exceed £350 we will look to settle the bill directly with the medical provider where possible.
If you have a non-urgent medical concern, such as sickness, headaches, or mild pain, contact our helpline first for advice on where to go for assistance
As good as travel insurance is, some things can’t be covered.

travel for medical procedures abroad
reimbursement for lost, damaged or stolen medicines or equipment
incidents related to alcohol or controlled substances
strike action that was common knowledge at the time of booking
choosing private treatment when suitable public facilities are available
choosing not to travel
