What does over 75s travel insurance cover?
From lost baggage to emergency medical care abroad, our over 75s policies are designed to support you when things don’t go to plan.
You’re covered for:
✔emergency medical treatment abroad – including hospital care, ambulance transport and overnight stays if you fall seriously ill or are injured while away.
✔getting you home safely – repatriation cover if you’re too unwell to travel as planned, including specialist medical transport if needed.
✔cancellations due to illness or injury – including if you're too unwell to travel, or experience a bereavement.
✔cutting your trip short – cover if something serious happens mid-holiday and you need to return early.
✔lost, stolen or damaged belongings – including your baggage, passport and personal money.
✔pre-existing conditions – if you’ve told us about them and we’ve accepted them, they can be included in your policy.
Example: You’re due to travel to Spain when you fall ill a few days before departure. If a doctor confirms you’re not fit to travel, your policy can help you claim back your trip costs – as long as the illness is covered and any related medical conditions were declared.
For more information, see our guide on what travel insurance includes. Always check your policy document so you know exactly what you’re covered for.
You’re not covered for:
✖cancelling because you’ve changed your mind – cover only applies to unexpected and insured reasons.
✖missed flights – unless it’s due to a strike‡, severe weather, or mechanical breakdowns.
✖undeclared medical conditions – always let us know about any health issues when you get a quote.
✖unattended items – valuables left alone may not be covered.
✖activities not listed on your policy – like extreme or cruises, unless you’ve added them.
✖travelling against advice of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) – policies won’t cover destinations where the UK government advises against all travel.
✖incidents involving alcohol or drugs – claims related to excessive alcohol or controlled substances won’t be accepted.
✖going against medical advice – for example, flying too soon after an operation or illness.
✖trips taken for business or work – your policy is for leisure trips only.
✖travelling for the purpose of receiving medical treatment – including consultations, tests, or planned procedures abroad.
Example: You had a knee replacement 18 months ago. Because it happened in the last two years, you’ll need to declare it when you get your quote. If you don’t, you may not be covered for cancellations or medical expenses linked to that joint.
Travelling with medical conditions?
When you’re 75 or over, it’s important to have travel insurance that takes your health into account. At Staysure, that’s what we do best – with cover that can include a wide range of pre-existing medical conditions, both recent and long-term. Just make sure they’re declared when you get your quote.
We’ll ask a few straightforward questions about your medical history. This includes any treatment, tests, medication, or hospital visits in the last two years. We’ll also ask if you’ve ever had a heart condition or circulation problem, even if it was years ago.
This information helps us understand your conditions and how they could affect you while you’re travelling – so we can make sure your policy includes the right level of protection if you become unwell abroad.
Scenarios we regularly cover
We regularly cover conditions that are more common in later life, including:
If your condition isn’t listed here, don’t worry – we might still be able to help. Take a look at our medical travel insurance page to see if it’s listed there, or speak to a member of our friendly team today.

If you’re over 75 and have seen a doctor recently, it’s worth declaring.
What our expert says…
“That includes things like scans, tests, or changes in medication – not just diagnoses. Being upfront helps us build cover that reflects your health and avoids complications if you need to make a claim.

How much is travel insurance for over 75s?
At 75 and over, travel insurance may cost more than it did a decade ago, especially if you’re declaring health conditions or planning a longer trip. But your age isn’t the only factor.
Where you’re going, how long you’re away, what you need cover for, and any medical conditions you declare will all affect the price.
The best way to find out what your policy will cost is to get a quote. It only takes a few minutes online or over the phone – and you’ll be able to see exactly what’s included.
“If you’re over the age of 75 and looking to bring the cost of your policy down, think about what you actually need cover for. If you’re only taking one or two trips this year, a single-trip policy could be better value than annual cover. And if it’s a modest holiday, like a UK break, you may not need high limits for cancellation or baggage, especially if you’re not taking valuables.
”
What destinations does over 75s holiday insurance cover?
Our over 75s travel insurance can cover most destinations. If you’re choosing an annual multi-trip policy, you’ll just need to pick the right region when you get a quote. For single trip policies, simply tell us which countries you’re visiting.
Whether it’s a classic weekend city break or a bigger trip you’ve been planning for years, we’ll help you find the right cover.
You can make changes to your policy, online and in your own time with My Staysure.
It's quick and easy to make changes to your policy online. If you need to make simple changes such as updating traveller details or renewing a policy that's details are staying the same, just visit your My Staysure account.
Tips for over 75s travel
With the right preparation, travel in your 70s can still be smooth, safe, and every bit as rewarding.
Before you book your holiday
The choices you make now can affect how much you spend, how easy your trip feels – and what kind of cover you’ll need.
Trip length matters
Going on a longer trip? You may need to bring extra medication, arrange mobility support, or check your policy covers the full duration (especially if you’re looking at annual cover).
Destination can make a difference
Places like the US and Caribbean usually cost more to insure than European holidays, mostly due to higher medical costs.
Not all accommodation suits everyone
Look for things like lift access, step-free entry, air conditioning, or proximity to local shops and help.
Cruise extras
Cruise lines may require medical cover up to a certain level (often £2 million or more).
Remember, cancellation cover for single trips starts from the day you take out your policy, so arranging your insurance as soon as you book (ASAB) means you may be covered if you need to cancel for reasons like illness, injury, or bereavement – as long as they’re listed in your policy.
Getting ready to travel
Getting everything in place before you go can take the pressure off and help you start your trip on the right foot.
Make sure your medical details are up to date
If your health has changed or you’ve started new treatment since buying your policy, let us know before you travel. It may affect your cover.
Speak to your GP if you’re unsure about flying
They can advise if you’re fit to travel and, if necessary, provide a fit to fly certificate.
Check your GHIC or EHIC card
If you’re travelling to Europe, make sure your card is valid. It may help with emergency treatment, but it doesn’t replace travel insurance.
Check your phone and payment setup
If you’re travelling abroad, check if your mobile plan includes roaming and that your bank knows you’ll be using your card overseas.
Label the essentials
Add your name and contact number to luggage and medication in case anything goes missing.
Take essential documents with you
Include your insurance validation certificate, emergency contact details, and any relevant medical information. A printed copy can be helpful if you’re not using a smartphone.
Leave your details with someone at home
Share where you’re staying and your travel dates so they can help more easily if something goes wrong while you’re away.
Staying well abroad
A few simple tips to help you feel at ease while you’re away, even if things don’t quite go to plan.
Keep medication in your hand luggage
Bring extra if you’re travelling for longer than usual, just in case your return is delayed.
Stay hydrated and take breaks
If you’re sightseeing or on an escorted tour, regular rest and water can make all the difference.
Use your phone for location and language tools
Apps like Google Maps or translation tools can come in handy abroad.
If you need medical treatment likely to cost more than £350, call us first
Our 24-hour medical team can help direct you to appropriate care and may be able to settle bills directly with the provider.
Lost luggage, delays or illness? Keep the paperwork
Written confirmation, receipts, or reports from your airline or hotel will help if you need to make a claim.
Common questions for travellers over 75
With Staysure, the length of your cover depends on the type of policy you choose and how long you’re planning to be away.
If you're over 75 and buying a single-trip policy, you can usually be covered for up to 104 days abroad. If you're aged 71 to 75, longer trips may be possible: up to 184 days for travel in Europe, and shorter limits for other regions.
If you choose annual multi-trip cover, each individual trip can last up to 35 days once you're over 70. You can travel more than once in the year, as long as your total time away doesn’t exceed 183 days.
We offer two types of travel insurance for people over 75, depending on how often you plan to travel:
Single trip cover – if you’re only planning one holiday, single-trip cover might be more cost-effective than annual cover.
Annual multi-trip cover – if you're taking more than one trip in the next 12 months. You’ll be covered for multiple holidays, up to a set number of days per trip.
Both options include access to our full range of cover. This can include protection for pre-existing medical conditions, depending on what you tell us during your quote.
Once you’ve chosen the type of policy, you’ll also be able to:
Select your destination – this affects what your policy includes and how much it costs.
Choose your level of cover – all policies come with medical cover, cancellation protection and baggage cover as standard, but you can pick the level that suits your plans:
Basic – cover generally suitable for shorter trips with fewer valuables.
Comprehensive – a more generous level of protection.
Signature – our highest cover, with no excess to pay and the most extensive limits.
Add optional extras – these help tailor your policy to the type of trip you’re taking. You might want:
Cruise Plus cover – for itinerary changes, onboard medical care, and cabin confinement.
golf cover – to protect your equipment and prepaid green fees.
gadget cover – for phones, tablets and other valuables.
travel disruption cover – for extra protection if your plans are affected by events like strikes** or bad weather.
We’re often able to include a wide range of conditions that are more common later in life. In fact, up to 97% of people who tell us about their medical history are offered a policy.
You can browse for your condition here, or simply start a quote. Even if your condition isn’t listed, we might still be able to help.
When you get a quote, we’ll ask a few straightforward questions to understand your health. You can complete the screening online or over the phone – whichever feels easier. It’s not a test or a judgment – just a way to make sure your policy reflects your needs.
A pre-existing medical condition is any illness or diagnosis you’ve had treatment, medication, symptoms or appointments for in the last two years. We’ll also ask if you’ve ever had heart problems, circulation issues or other long-term concerns, even if they were years ago.
Being open about your health means your policy can do its job properly.

Some travel insurers set an upper age limit – typically around 70 or 75 – which can make it harder to get the right policy as you get older. In some cases, cover may still be available, but with restrictions on things like trip length, destination, or policy type.
At Staysure, we don’t put an upper age limit on our policies. In fact, we specialise in travel insurance for seniors.
You can explore our age-specific travel insurance pages here:
It’s easy to assume your bank’s travel insurance has you covered, but after a certain age, that might not be the case.
Some bank travel insurance policies stop cover at age 70 or 75. Others continue but with restrictions, such as reduced trip lengths, or limited support for pre-existing medical conditions.
That’s especially important if you’re managing ongoing health needs. Bank policies don’t always ask about medical history upfront, so it’s your responsibility to declare everything. If you don’t, you may not be fully covered.
According to our Don’t Bank On It report, one in four said they chose bank travel insurance because it was free, yet claims were more likely to be declined, with a 9% higher rejection rate compared to specialist cover.
That’s why many over-75s turn to providers like Staysure. We don’t set an upper age limit. And we’ll guide you through a clear, supportive quote process that helps make sure your policy fits you.
With our Comprehensive and Signature policies, if you lose your medication, we’ll be able to help you find replacements, so you don’t have to worry about any mishaps.
Please note, while we can help you find replacements, the cost to replace them isn’t covered.
Travel insurance does tend to cost more in your 70s and beyond. That’s because older travellers are more likely to make a claim, whether for illness, cancellations, or emergency medical treatment while abroad.
Your quote will reflect how likely you are to need support while you’re away, and how much that support might cost.
A GHIC or EHIC can be helpful, but they don’t do the same job as travel insurance – and they were never designed to.
These cards give you access to state healthcare in some European countries, usually on the same terms as residents. That might mean reduced-cost treatment in a public hospital, or access to emergency care without needing to pay up front.
But they don’t cover everything. They won’t help with getting you home after a medical emergency or support if you’re travelling with health conditions. And they won’t step in if your trip is cancelled, your luggage is lost, or your passport goes missing.
That’s why many travellers still choose to have both – using their GHIC or EHIC for basic medical access, and travel insurance for the rest. Together, they give you much more complete protection, especially if your trip doesn’t go to plan.
If you still have an EHIC, you can continue to use it until the expiry date. After that, you’ll need to apply for a GHIC through the NHS or GOV.uk.
At 75 and over, the best travel insurance is one that reflects your health, your plans, and the way you travel now.
That usually starts with medical cover. If you’re living with long-term or recently diagnosed conditions, it’s important to be able to declare them clearly. At Staysure, we ask straightforward questions to help include a wide range of conditions in your policy – so you know what is and isn’t covered before you go.
Good cover should also protect more than just emergencies abroad. You may want cancellation cover that starts as soon as you take out your policy, and pays back the full cost of your holiday if your health changes. Some policies also include extra support, like bringing you home with a medical escort, or covering the cost if you need to stay longer after falling ill.
It’s also worth checking the practical details. For example:
does the baggage limit reflect what you’re taking?
can you remove the excess or add optional extras like cruise cover?
are you happy with how long each trip can last? If you're 76 or over, single-trip cover with Staysure can last up to 104 days, depending on where you're going.
If you're over 75, it's worth knowing that travel insurance can also help protect your trip before it even begins. Buying a policy early means cancellation cover starts from your chosen start date, including if your health changes after booking but before you travel.
For single-trip travel insurance, it could be a good idea to buy your policy once your travel dates are confirmed. If you’re booking something further in advance – like a cruise – you can take out cover up to 18 months ahead and add cruise protection at the same time. For travellers aged 76 and over, the maximum trip length is 104 days.
For annual multi-trip insurance, your cancellation cover starts from the policy start date. So, if you’re planning a few holidays in the year ahead, starting your policy early means you’ll be covered for anything that comes up in the run-up to each trip. If you’re over 70, each trip can last up to 35 days, with up to 183 days of travel covered in total across the year.
A few things to keep in mind:
Your policy needs to start before you leave the UK.
You won’t be able to buy or activate cover once you’ve already departed.
If your health changes after booking, you’ll need to tell us before you travel.
