Can I get travel insurance for medical conditions?
Some travel insurance providers will only cover you for treatment and claims that aren’t related to pre-existing medical conditions. But emergency treatment abroad can cost a small fortune.
If you have a health condition, you’ll need medical travel insurance including pre-existing conditions, so you’re properly protected. It’s the best way to make sure your policy is valid when you need to use it.
Over 97% of people can get cover with us. Add your medical condition(s) to our award-winning travel insurance, which includes COVID-19 cover*, luggage losses, cancellation cover and more.
That’s your passport to peace of mind.

What’s not covered?
Travel insurance with medical cover is there to offer a helping hand if something unexpected happens. But that doesn’t always mean everything is covered.
It’s important to read through your policy before you set off on your trip. It’ll help you understand what you’re covered for, and what you’re not.
You’re not covered for:
✘ Travelling against your doctor’s advice
✘ Claims related to pre-existing medical conditions you haven’t told us about
✘ Planned treatment or non-emergency care
✘ Travel for medical procedures abroad
✘ Reimbursement for lost, damaged or stolen medicines or equipment
✘ Incidents related to alcohol or controlled substances
✘ Strike action that was common knowledge at the time of booking
✘ Choosing private treatment when suitable public facilities are available
✘ Choosing not to travel
We’ve got more 5 Star reviews on Trustpilot than any other travel insurance provider
To get cover, you’ll need to declare all pre-existing condition(s) to us when getting a quote for travel insurance. We make it easy to get a quote tailored to your trip and health.
See our FAQs for more on what’s covered and what you need to disclose.
We’ll need a few quick details to get started:
Our simple medical screening helps us understand you better and the care you could need abroad.
We’ll ask about pre-existing conditions, which is any health issue where in the last two years you’ve had:
We also need to know if you’ve ever had heart conditions or circulation problems.
If you complete the screening and we can cover you, your quote will be available to view online, and emailed to you. It includes travel insurance tailored to cover your condition(s).
Explore and choose from three levels of cover to suit your needs, and select optional add-ons to customise your quote for your trip, including winter sports or cruise plus benefits.
Medical emergencies abroad can be extremely expensive. Below are examples of emergency medical treatment without insurance to cover the costs.
If you need medical attention abroad, you want to focus on the care, not the cost. That’s why we give you unlimited cover with our Comprehensive and Signature policies.
What our expert says…
"Whether you’ve booked a holiday abroad or are planning on enjoying a staycation in the UK, it’s safe to say that travel is good for your health. I think another way to help keep those cortisol levels low is to take out medical travel insurance. It can help give you the peace of mind to enjoy your holiday and all the health benefits it brings."

We might not be able to cover you if:
✘ Your condition is life-limiting. If our doctor or GP has described your condition as life-limiting, we might still be able to offer you cover. But this would depend on your current health, when your trip is and where you’re travelling to.
✘ Your diagnosis is unknown. If you’re undergoing medical investigations or waiting for a diagnosis, we won’t be able to cover any claims related to any undiagnosed conditions. However, we still might be able to offer you a level of cover. Call us for free on 0800 033 4902.
✘ You’re not fit to travel. We also need to know that you’re fit enough to travel and that your doctors wouldn’t advise against travel.
In an emergency, contact the local emergency services first, and then call our 24-hour emergency helpline. Our team will help arrange your care and find the most appropriate place for treatment and follow up care.
Our helpline is open 24/7, 365 days a year:
If you or someone on your policy is admitted to hospital or your outpatient treatment is likely to cost more than £350, contact us as soon as possible.
Where you have a valid claim and your medical expenses exceed £350, we will look to settle the bill directly with the medical provider where possible.
If you have a non-urgent medical concern, such as sickness, headaches, or mild pain, contact our helpline first for advice on where to go for assistance.
Specialist travel insurance is another way to describe holiday insurance for medical conditions. It’s a specialist type of insurance that’s often not covered by a standard travel insurance policy.
It’s a term that can also be used to describe other types of ‘non-standard’ policy too, like winter sports, cruise insurance, and travel insurance for over 70s.
Excluding medical conditions from your insurance policy means you’re not covered for any related medical problems while you’re away.
You can’t currently exclude individual medical conditions from your insurance policy. We offer full cover for all of your pre-existing medical conditions. In rare cases, we may need to exclude conditions from your cover but we’ll make you aware of this.
If you are unsure on what needs to be declared you can speak to one of our friendly agents over the phone.
You don’t need to declare pregnancy when getting travel insurance, unless you have a pre-existing condition relating to your pregnancy.
Your policy can cover certain complications of pregnancy, but only if the due date is more than 8 weeks after your trip ends, or 16 weeks if you’re expecting multiple births.
For a summary of what’s covered, check our insurance product information document. You can view the full policy wording with your quote.
From the minute your insurance kicks in, we’re here to cover you if you need to cancel your trip because of illness. This includes whether it’s you who falls ill or someone you’re travelling with, staying with, or a close relative.
For single trip policies, this starts from when you buy your travel insurance. For annual multi-trips, you can delay the start date up to 90 days in advance.
Please read through our policy documents for more details.
Fit to fly means that it’s medically safe for you to fly. To have your medical conditions covered by travel insurance, you must be fit to travel, including flying.
If you have a stable health condition, and your doctor hasn’t advised against travel or flying, then you can follow their advice on travelling safely. When in doubt, always speak to your doctor.
